AS A NATION... WE CRIED A COLLECTIVE TEAR. HUGGED ONE ANOTHER A LITTLE CLOSER. ASKED EACH OTHER IN DISBELIEF... WHY???
WHAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AN EXCITING NIGHT OF HIGH DRAMA ONSCREEN TURNED INTO HORROR OFF SCREEN. THE THRILL OF STAYING UP 'TILL MIDNIGHT TO BE THE VERY FIRST TO SEE THE SUMMER'S MOST ANTICIPATED MOVIE WAS SHATTERED BY ONE DISTURBED YOUNG MAN DETERMINED TO MAKE HIS OWN MARK ON THAT NIGHT.
ITS CLEAR, AS FANS OF BATMAN PLANNED FOR THIS BIG FUN NIGHT JAMES HOLMES ALREADY HAD THE TOOLS IN PLACE TO ATTACK. POLICE SAY, OVER THE PAST TWO MONTHS HE'D PURCHASED FOUR WEAPONS. HE BOUGHT THEM AT TWO DIFFERENT STORES AND NOT WITHIN THE FIVE DAY PERIOD WHICH WOULD HAVE ALERTED AUTHORITIES. HE BOUGHT THE ROUNDS ON-LINE. 3000 IN ONE PURCHASE. 3000 IN ANOTHER.
BY ALL ACCOUNTS, HOLMES FLEW UNDER THE RADAR. HE'D NEVER BEEN IN TROUBLE WITH THE LAW. HAD GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE, BUT WAS LEAVING UC DENVER WHERE HE'D STUDIED NUEROSCIENCE. THAT GETS US BACK TO THE QUESTION... WHY???
AS I LOOKED INTO SOME OF THE DEADLIEST MASS SHOOTINGS AROUND THE WORLD I LOOKED FOR ANSWERS. THE CONFESSED KILLED IN NORWAY WHO MASSACRED 77 KIDS AT A CAMP IN NORWAY WANTED TO SEND AN ANTI-MUSLIM MESSAGE. THE ARMY PSYCHIATRIST WHO KILLED 13 AT FORT HOOD IS SAID TO HAVE BECOME A "VIOLENT ISLAMIST." THE VIRGINIA TECH STUDENT WHO KILLED 32 WAS REPORTEDLY MENTALLY UNSOUND. A MAN WHO SHOT UP A LUBY'S IN TEXAS KILLING 23 WAS DESCRIBED IN WIKIPEDIA AS "ANGRY AND WITHDRAWN." WITH THE TWO COLUMBINE KIDS WE LOOKED AT THE ISSUE OF OUTCASTS, ANTI-DRESSANTS, VIOLENT VIDEO GAMES/MUSIC, AND GUN LAWS.
THESE EXPLAINATIONS MAY ANSWER SOME OF THE WHY'S... AND YET AGAIN THEY DON'T.
Jaime Zendejas I don't think we will ever. I don't understand how someone can do that to other human beings. Not even animals do that to their own.
ReplyDeleteSharon Johnston I think they see everyone who ever hurt him, ignored him, etc...the brain is a very complex organ and when things get all mixed up.. we can try to understand.. his deed is horrendous, but he is in a very sad place!

Joseph Radaza Unfortunately, unless we live in a totalitarian country .You will never prevent tragedies like this from happening. That's the fact of life here. People talk about gun control. But when individuals are hell-bent on destruction. For the most part, there is very little we can do except take a re-active approach. Look at Europe, they have very strict gun laws. Most of their active shooters are replaced with suicide bombers.

ReplyDeleteWhen I sent you a tweet about the Aurora Police Chief blabbing out the suspect's address in a soundbite, I was horrified that the chief gave the address and apartment number out on a live news conference. To me, it was irresponsible of the chief giving the exact address; I thought he could have been more tactful by giving out information of the general area without blabbing the exact address. I believe Chief Oakes gave potential looky loos some ammunition by blabbing out the address. I made sure that address got edited out when I prepared the soundbites for a live Southern California Talkshow, lest anyone listening on the internet would try to swing by the suspect's home.

ReplyDeleteMystere, I guess I'm still not clear on what's wrong with publishing the address? Do you mean the apartment? The news crews were all there, so not sure it is private anymore anyway. Am I missing something?
